HyClone Breaks Ground for New World Class Manufacturing Facility

Cramlington, UK (May 26, 2003)-
In a groundbreaking ceremony attended by the Perbio Board, local dignitaries and construction company officials, HyClone marked the next phase in the expansion of their global manufacturing capabilities. A state-of-the-art, 5,000 SqM facility representing an investment of US$11M (GBP7.4M) will be constructed at the UK site located in Cramlington, England.

Construction will occur over two phases, providing manufacturing for sterile liquids, BioProcess Containers (BPCs) and Dry Powdered Media (DPM). Completion is scheduled for March 2004.

The initial phase includes the construction of a 3,000 SqM two-story facility incorporating manufacturing clean rooms, facility support and office space. The clean rooms, totalling 2,840 SqM, include:

  • A Class C clean room (730 SqM) for the manufacturing of BPCs, increasing current capacity by a factor of 4;
  • A cGMP compliant, Class D sterile liquid manufacturing area (855 SqM), dedicated to the provision of Animal Derived Component Free (ADCF) formulations;
  • A cGMP compliant, Class D sterile liquid manufacturing area (456 SqM), for the provision of non-ADCF formulations;
  • A state-of-the-art HyNetics™ module employing single-use, disposable product contact surfaces for automated hydration and mixing of powders, and dispensing and packaging of liquids;
  • A DPM manufacturing area (800 SqM), incorporating the latest continuous micronisation technology.

The second phase will incorporate the conversion of the existing 2,000 SqM facility into warehouse, logistics and additional office space.

Marc Strijbos, VP Perbio Science Europe, said of the investment, “The new build is an exciting development in HyClone's support of the Biopharmaceutical Industries. It combines the HyNetics stateof- the-art liquid handling system with our CX5-14 advanced film technology, to produce true ADCF segregated liquid handling from formulation to packaging.”
