HyClone Introduces Fetal Bovine Serum Replacement
Logan, Utah (April 2003) -
The demand for high quality fetal bovine serum (FBS) for use in cell culture continues to increase, thus reducing the availability of FBS. Fetal bovine serum economics are not straightforward and few industries parallel the dynamics encountered in the serum business. FBS supply is a by-product of the beef and dairy industries, and is dictated by many factors. These include beef consumption, dairy product consumption, feed prices, environmental conditions such as drought, cattle import and export, and government farm policy. The outbreak of diseases such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and foot and mouth disease (FMD) in other countries also have an impact on FBS supplies in the US.
In an effort to address the FBS needs of researchers, HyClone's Research & Development group has created a new bovine serum-based product that offers equal or superior growth performance to that of FBS, but is abundantly available. Bovine Growth Serum (BGS) consists of HyClone's high quality, US bovine calf serum, supplemented with chemically defined components. These components include vitamins, amino acids, trace metals and other small molecules that stimulate cell growth and proliferation. HyClone has created this product following their trademark standard of excellence, from collection, to processing, to final filtration.
BGS is available now - call 1-800-HYCLONE to request a sample, free of charge.
