Increased use of hybridomas for monoclonal antibody production has created a demand for serum low in immunoglobulin (Ig) levels yet equivalent in performance to regular FBS. A typical cell culture medium for the growth of hybridomas includes 1, 5, or even 10 percent FBS. Even culture media with lower concentrations of FBS contain a level of bovine Ig nearly equivalent to the amount of Ig produced by many hybridoma cultures. As a result, purification of the desired antibody becomes increasingly difficult. The average IgG concentration (determined nephelometrically) of HyClone’s FBS is 190 µg/ml and our Low IgG FBS typically averages 20 µg/ml. Low IgG FBS offers a distinct advantage in that the serum is not chemically treated and occurs naturally. Because the serum has naturally low IgG levels, it may be directly substituted for other FBS applications without prior regulatory approval. Low IgG FBS is filtered using serial 40nm (0.04µm) pore-size rated filters.
