Technical Brief: HyQ® SFX-Insect™

Insect Cell Line Applications of HyQ SFX-Insect Serum-Free Medium

HyQ SFX-Insect, a serum-free medium specifically developed for the Baculovirus Expression Vector System (BEVS) technology, supports excellent Sf9, Sf21, and High Five™* propagation and yields up to three fold increases in virus replication and recombinant protein production.

Recent studies conducted by several testing laboratories have experimentally confirmed that HyQ SFX-Insect medium successfully supports the propagation of additional insect cell lines and baculovirus production.

These include the following:

1.

Drosophila melanogaster D.mel 2 cell line yields of up to 4.5 x 107 cells/mL have been demonstrated. Recently, Drosophila cells are also gaining popularity for the stable gene expression.

2. A Heliothis zea cell line yielded 5 x 106 cells/mL. This cell line is currently being developed as a production method for Heliothis armigera baculovirus to control H.zea larvae, which is devastating cotton and sorgum crops in Australia. H.zea cells are some of the most difficult cells to grow in serum-free medium. These studies were carried out in the Department of Chemical Engineering, Queensland University and ABC Pty Ltd., Brisbane, Australia in collaborations with HyClone.
3. A Spodoptera exigua cell line which is used to replicate Spodoptera exigua baculovirus for controlling beet army and corn boll insect pests.
