Nutrient Media Supplements
| Living cells in vivo obtain the nutrients they require directly from the blood and biological tissues that surround them. Cell culture media are composed of inorganic salts, sugars (energy sources), vitamins, amino acids and other components which are intended to mimic as nearly as possible these natural biological fluids. Duplicating nature’s miracle with exactness is, of course, impossible. Accordingly, animal derived serum is a popular media supplement (FBS in particular). FBS is a natural biological fluid, is readily available, provides not only the necessary nutrients, but contains all the other biological and environmental factors that cells in vitro are accustomed to. HyClone is recognized as the world leader in serum quality and supply. Serum may present a challenge for some biopharmaceutical and biologics manufacturers in that it contains potentially undesired proteins that need to be purified from the end-product. Regulatory pressures to remove any animal derived components from products intended for human therapeutic use may compound this challenge. Accordingly, many biopharmaceutical manufacturers are developing or purchasing serum-free and protein-free media formulations or supplements. HyClone is addressing this need both by researching and developing a high-performance line of serum-free media platforms and by assembling a portfolio of nutritional and growth supplements.
